When you are physically or emotionally exhausted, self-care looks like running to the source of peace rather than trying to power
through on your own strength.
Matthew 11:28–30
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
When you hear the words “self-care,” what comes to mind? A pristine, aesthetic bathroom? A 90-minute meditation at sunrise? A perfectly balanced green juice?
For a long time, that’s what I thought it had to look like. But let’s be honest: when life gets busy, that kind of polished, aspirational self-care feels completely out of reach. And when you throw the chaotic, double-everything reality of twin life into the mix? Forget about it.
When you are constantly balancing multiple schedules, feedings, and the beautiful whirlwind of raising twins, your own basic needs are usually the first thing to slide all the way to the bottom of the to-do list. Sometimes, bargaining with yourself to drink a single glass of water, eat a meal, or remember your daily vitamins feels like a monumental task.
But I’ve had to learn a tough lesson recently: you can’t pour from an empty cup, especially when you have two tiny humans relying on you to fill theirs. Real self-care isn’t about being perfect; it’s about doing the small things that keep you anchored, and showing yourself a mountain of grace along the way.
Enter Finch: Gamifying the Little Wins
Because building daily habits can feel impossible when you’re running on pure survival mode, I started using an app called Finch, and it has completely changed how I look at my daily routines.
Finch is a gamified self-care app. When you sign up, you get a virtual pet bird to take care of. The catch? The only way your bird gets energy to grow, explore, and go on adventures is if you take care of yourself.
Instead of an intimidating, rigid checklist, Finch lets you set tiny, manageable daily goals. Because twin life means taking things one minute at a time, I use it to track the absolute essentials that keep me functional:
Drinking enough water throughout the day (and not letting it sit forgotten on the counter)
Remembering my daily wellness and vitamin routine
Taking a 60-second breather when the house gets loud
Checking off the basic, everyday tasks that keep me feeling human
Every time you tick off a goal, your bird gains energy to go out into the world, returning with cute little stories to share. If you miss a day because the routine completely went out the window—which happens often!—nothing bad happens. There’s no guilt, no penalties, and no pressure. It’s just a gentle, supportive space designed to make looking after yourself feel a little lighter.
Let’s Do This Together!
Self-care is always easier when you have a community in your corner—especially fellow parents or anyone navigating a busy season of life who gets how hard it is to prioritize yourself.
Finch has a wonderful feature called “Tree Town” where you can add friends and send small, silent bursts of encouragement (called “Vibes”) to each other throughout the day. It’s perfect because there are no high-pressure messaging threads—just quick, cute reminders that someone is rooting for you while you’re in the trenches.
I’m working on building consistency with my own daily habits right now, and I’d love to have some company.
